Think Of The Children

Abstinence-only sex education programs, a major plank in President Bush’s education plan, have had no impact on teenagers’ behavior in his home state of Texas, according to a new study. – Texas Teens Increased Sex After Abstinence Program

This isn’t the only study that shows no positive effects from these programs. If you care about young people and want them to stay unpregnant and disease-free you must support what works – comprehensive sex education and the easy availability of contraception. People with a contrary view are invited to join me in reality asap.

  1. Right on! Here in Washington state, we’re trying to get a bill passed that would require that schools providing sex education provide comprehensive, accurate sex education, not that abstinence-only tripe.

I say “we” because I’m co-leading a workshop tonight on advocacy with legislators for this bill. Let me know if you want more information to get one started in Wisconsin!

  2. well, first off, in reality the technically correct answer is “abstinence is the only sure way to not get pregnant or contract a sexually transmitted disease”

also, in reality, teenagers are going to engage in sexual intercourse.

so while i have huge issues with supplying contraceptives to teenagers, the reality is it should be done.

  3. Abstinence is the best way for kids to be totally safe from unwanted pregnancies and STDs. But teaching abstinence to kids isn’t. There’s a huge and important difference there that a lot of folks don’t seem to get. Anyway, the facts remain: give kids condoms and facts, they stay unpregnant and healthy. Give them morality lessons only and more of them end up pregnant and sick.
