Slashdot is discussing Microsoft and MTV’s new music-selling music-renting clusterfuck. Dig it:

Urge also lets you rent songs: $9.95 a month (or $99 a year) lets you download all the tracks you want to a computer, while $14.95 ($149 a year) lets you transfer those downloads to most newer Windows Media-compatible players. These rented songs can’t be burned to CD and go silent if you stop paying the fees.

  1. Yea. THATS gonna work. Microsoft and Viacom actually think that someone will be STUPID enough to “rent ” songs to a commputer THAT CAN’T EVEN BE BURNED to a CD, When ITunes lets you buy AND burn them to CD them for 99 cents, which leads me to 2 questions

    1. Microsoft and Viacom didn’t actually pay a consultant money, for this ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT BUSINESS PLAN, did they?

    2. Do microsoft and Viacom actually NEED another tax-time write off?

  2. I’m finally speechless. The absurdity of it……unreal.

  3. I guess they figure they can make even a failed model work because of their desktop leverage. They put this thing in enough Windows installations they’ll get 10% of the market without really trying … and without being very good.

  4. Thank you, I could not have sead it better my self.
