“In the year 2014… the Fourth Estate’s fortunes have waned.”

October 30, 2006

I can’t tell you exactly What The Internet Means. Talk to someone from the future. They’ll know. What I can say, however, is that it’s Big. According to some, it’s as big as the printing press and may be heralding a radical transformation in the way we structure and interact with knowledge.

Everyone seems to agree that there are serious implications for the news media. What are these implications? Opinions vary widely, but one of the most compelling speculations on the subject is EPIC 2014, a short documentary film from the perspective of someone in the future. If you have never seen it, I encourage you to watch this 8 minute video. Even if you have seen it, I encourage yo to watch it again, as it has been updated since it first appeared.

In the year 2014 people have access to a breadth and depth of information unimaginable in an earlier age.

Everyone contributes in some way.

Everyone participates to create a living, breathing mediascape. However, the Press, as you know it, has ceased to exist. The Fourth Estate’s fortunes have waned. 20th Century news organizations are an after-thought, a lonely remnant of a not too distant past.

Click here to watch EPIC now.

  1. Thank you! I’d seen that years ago, but could never find it again, to share.
