Cal Worthington and his dog Spot

April 11, 2007

If you know who that is, you’ve probably spent some time living on the west coast. Or maybe you read this story in the New York Times the other day. If you have no clue, here’s the deal. Throughout my childhood in southern California this guy’s TV commercials were ubiquitous. Cal Worthington is a used car dealer. He had a cheesy jingle and a cowboy hat. And in every single commercial he would introduce himself by saying “Hi, I’m Cal Worthington…and this is my dog Spot!” But the gag was that “Spot” was never a dog. It was always something different: an elephant or a bear or a tiger or something. Then, to express the lengths to which he would go to beat anyone else’s deal on a car, Cal would tell everyone: “I will stand upon my head ’till my ears are turnin’ red.”

He was a staple of my childhood. It made me laugh to see this article and remember. Apparently he’s still selling cars, too, after all these years!

If you need a set of wheels, go see Cal
If you’re lookin’ for a deal, go see Cal
“I will stand upon my head ’till my ears are turnin’ red”
go see Cal, go see Cal, go see Cal
